![]() ![]() Are Chris Martin’s twisting, messianic arm movements a bit much? Possibly. Was the title track played to death back then? Sure. It can be hard to pinpoint the moment you got into one of your favorite bands, but Coldplay’s massive Apple campaign for their 2008 album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends was what first hooked me. Maybe even in a Volkswagen, the brand with which it became inextricably linked. It was romantic and beautiful, successfully selling a sense of aspirational peace and freedom that made you want to set out on your own Drake-scored adventure. It’s no wonder it was so beloved, and is still a touchstone for those who experienced it during its initial run. The lame house party was not the real destination it was the journey there and back, the time spent in a contemplative reverie, that mattered. I remember being completely taken by the world the commercial presents: the dreamy freedom of driving around with your friends, enjoying beautiful music on a gorgeous night, admiring the quiet starry sky. It introduced me, and many others, to Nick Drake (the track’s use led to record sales for Drake topping those from the previous 30 years), but it also set a standard for a marriage of commercial aesthetic and sonic harmony that would come to influence ad spots throughout the following two decades. There are perhaps few song and commercial pairings as iconic-and important for both the artist and advertising-as Volkswagen’s use of Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon” for its 1999 Cabrio commercial (directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and filmed by Lance Acord). Don’t worry-we won’t try to sell you anything. Read on for the Paste Staff’s favorite song/advertisement moments from the last 20 years. Throughout most of the 2000s, however, we discovered commercial songs the good ol’ fashioned way. Now we have Shazam, and if we hear a cool tune we don’t have to quickly memorize lyrics so we can later plug them into Google and find the song at hand. For many people in the MP3 generation, brands like Apple and Volkswagen introduced us to hip new songs by artists who would later blow up-or even become our favorites. Point being: commercials, they’re a dying breed! While we’re not going to cry over a loss of distracting advertisements, it is worth looking back through the history of commercials-the last two decades in particular-and thinking about which ones felt culturally significant. These days, more and more of us are cutting cable and switching over to streaming-only when it comes to our entertainment avenues-and if a particular streaming outlet has ads, more often than not we’re inclined to pay the extra few dollars a month not to have to endure them. ![]() However, they’re becoming a scarcity in many people’s lives. This plays more like a fantasy Little Big Planet, which is no bad thing! Trine 2 is rarely a very challenging game, and movement is nowhere near as tight as classic platformers like Mario. Multiplayer is excellently integrated, making it a big improvement, while making perfect use of the three Trine characters. Trine 2 adds online multiplayer, which allows you to jump into games of up to three people, each playing one character, cooperating through the game. Medieval fantasy worlds can too often lack any individuality, but the beautiful levels of Trine 2 manage to create their own fairy tale feel. The story isn't fantastic, but it doesn't matter when the game is as good looking and fun to play as Trin 2 is. Coming as it does at the tail end of a roaring holiday game season, Trine 2 is the dessert you deserve to close out your year of gaming, or a great appetizer to set the stage for next year.In terms of gameplay and presentation, Trine 2 feels like an improvement over it's pretty predecessor, while not being any kind of revolution. Onscreen characters hit the sweet spot between realism and cartoon exaggeration, so both fights and level navigation play out as dynamic thrill rides.īy adding in well-implemented online cooperative options to join the equally viable local multiplayer, Frozenbyte gives players the feature most requested after the original game’s release, and every other element of the franchise moves forward in meaningful ways. From spider-filled caves to wave-wracked beaches, the wide variety of environments keeps the levels from fading to background visual noise. ![]() If youre the type to complete games 100, stats are tracked. Trine 2 embraces pure fantasy, filling the world with oversized snails, phosphorescent mushrooms, and lush, luminous forests. Length Trine 2 isnt a lengthy game by any means: you should be able to blast through it in a weekend, at least if playing it co-op. Though Trine 2 shoots for humor and storybook simplicity in its storytelling, there’s nothing funny about the breathtaking visuals. Multiplayer can rapidly devolve into a comedy of errors filled with misplaced boxes and tumbling boulders, but it only adds to the fun, especially since a checkpoint is always near at hand. The physics-based interactions and appropriately floaty jumping add some big laughs as you and your buddies stumble ahead. Two or three-person cooperative play makes it easier to fudge your way through difficult puzzles, but the fun of juggling all three characters more than makes up for the loss. The pace is slower and the challenge higher in single-player, where every puzzle must be solved with only a single character onscreen (a button press cycles between your options). Though the levels are identical in single- and multiplayer, the game experience is drastically different, and well worth a playthrough both ways. Combat is infrequent and borders on being overly simplistic, but as brief exclamations in the midst of a longer puzzle level, the battles fit the bill. The most elusive puzzles are reserved for optional pick-ups that can be bypassed in favor of a faster pace. Puzzle design is clever, but stops short of frustration. Perhaps you can reach that high platform with a well-timed grapple? Or maybe the wizard can just create a pile of boxes to reach the elusive ledge? Often, there are multiple answers to the question, most of which reward creative thinking and cooperation. With such varied movesets, Trine 2’s central gameplay conceit concerns figuring out when to use which abilities to solve a puzzle. The cowardly wizard conjures new platforms and boxes out of thin air, or levitates nasty goblins out of reach. The clever thief’s grappling hook sends her hurtling up to hard to reach places, while her bow hits distant spear-throwers. The simple-minded knight’s sword waving fends off the most dangerous monsters, while his hammer smashes walls. The game’s greatest strength lies in the distinct abilities of each of the characters. The knight, wizard, and thief are called upon to save the kingdom once again, and the lighthearted banter between the characters keeps the otherwise clichéd story rolling. Like its predecessor, Trine 2 stars three fantasy archetypes as they platform and puzzle their way through a lush fantasy storybook. With online or local cooperative play, slick puzzle design, and a whimsical fairy tale tone, Trine 2 is a year-ending treat you shouldn’t miss. That’s the happy scenario with Trine 2, one of this year’s most beautiful, rewarding, and downright fun downloadable titles. It’s always gratifying to see a good game make the changes it needs to become great in a sequel. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tuck the entire roll inside itself with consistent pressure to keep hair on the outside of the twist smooth.Bend the roll to tuck ends under, noting that the bend at the top will be the top of the finished twist.Twist the hair slightly to form a thick roll. With the new production, Tabbert manages to tell a complicated tale through dance - a task that poses challenges, but reminds him of the connection he shares with dancers. “It is stylistically such a perfect blend of classical and jazz motifs that are insanely danceable and very catchy,” Tabbert said.Īrchetypal characters like “The Ingenue,” “The Lounge Singer” and “The Bartender” drive French Twist’s plot, Tabbert said. Tabbert said the ballet’s prerecorded score draws heavily upon French composer Claude Bolling’s work, specifically his jazz suites. We also have a mixture of vintage and vintage-inspired costuming that transports you back there in an instant.” “The stage will have a Parisian street scene as well as a lounge scene with full bar set pieces and authentic vintage accents. “Also, Edith Piaf and the film La Vie en Rose provided inspiration for the path French Twist took in the creation process.”Īccording to Tabbert, this time around, the action takes place in Paris, mostly within a jazz lounge, in the late 1930s. “I have always been intrigued by the era of the ‘20s through ‘40s, when the style of fashion and music were rapidly, for that time, evolving and booming,” Tabbert told the City Paper.
